---- ----------------- REV. LEWIS HUFFMANDIED SUNDAY --------- ---------------------- Rev.Lewis Huffman, son of John and Susan (Myers) Huffman, was born in Clark county, Ohio a few miles west of the city of Springfield on the sixth day of June, 1844, and finished the last lap of life's long weary road at his home in Mt. Zion on S eptember 6, 1925, being 81years and 3 months of age at time of death. When he was about two years of age his parents emigrated to the state of Indiana and settled on a farm in Huntington county where Lewis grew to manhood and obtained a meager education in the schools of that period . His father died when he was about 17 years of age and as he was the oldest son in a family of seven children he learned early in life the meaning of the word responsibility, ad[sic] nobly did he carry the burdens that rested so heavily on his young shoulders , and it is but fair to state here, that in assisting his widowed mother in this trying hour, he was ably assisted by his brother George who was his junior by two years. In the years of 1868 he was united in marriageto Amy Mounsey who had been a teacher in the Wells county schools, and to this union four sons were born, being D. P. and J . S. living in Salamonie township and F. C. living near by Bluffton and one son who died in infancy. After his marriage he lived on his mother's farm for one year, but in January of 1869 he with his young wife and baby removed to a tract of land in Jackson township where he had previously erected a hewed log cabin, and while the log cabin has long since given way to more commodius buildings, yet with but a few intervals, he has lived on this farm for more than a half century. Even a brief biography of Lewis Huffman would be in a measure the history of all the early settlers. In 1869 his farm was virgin forest, but he lived to see the place where towered the giant oaks, elms, and hickories, transformed into fertile fields and meadows. The mud roads that were almost impassable four months in the year give way to good gravel roads, and the automobile supercede the farm wagon as a means of transportation for the family. As he himself said, "It was his privilege to live in the most wonderful age of the world's history." He united with the Church of the Brethren about the year 1870 and from that time until his death he was loyal and true to the pinciples of the church of his choice and was for more than thirty years, an Elder in the church, having charge of the class at the Sugar Grove and for about two years of this time, also having charge of the Brethren church at Markle. Owing to the infirmitites due to advancing age, he had not been able to attend church services regularly, but he made it a point of honor to always attend the annual love feast and communion of his church at Sugar Grove, every autumn, but at the annual love feast this autumn his place will be vacant. While he had been in failing health for a long time, it was only during the past month that his condition became critical and the frail tenement of clay, brok e pretty rapidly and he passed away without pain, on Sunday , Sept. 6th. Besides the widow and the three sons, and one brother, previously referred to, he leaves another brother, Jacob F. Huffman, of Warren and one sister, Mrs. Rachael Campbell, of Liberty Center and one brother, Elijah Huffman, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Minnich and Mrs. Martha Gephart, having preceded him in death. Besides these there are thirteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and a wide circle of more distant relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sugar Grove church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in charge of Rev. D. B . Garber, of Markle. Burial was in the Jones cemetery.

LEWIS HUFFM AN, one of the prosperous agriculturists of Jackson Township , was born in Clarke County, Ohio, the date of his birth being June 6, 1844. When two years of age he was taken by his parents, John and Susannah ( Myers) Huffman, to Huntington County, Indiana, and there he grew to manhood, being reared to the avocation of a farmer, which he has made his life-work. January 4, 1868, he was married to Miss Miami Monnsey, a native of Wells County, Indiana, born in Liberty Township, a daughter of John and Caroline (Stratton) Monnsey. Her mother died when she wasa child of ten years, and her father died April 30 , 1886. They were among the early settlers of Wells County, and Mr. Monnsey saw the transformation of the county from a wilderness into its present condition. Four children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Huffman - -David P., John Scott, Franklin C. and one who died in infancy. DavidP . , their eldest son, was educated in the schools of his township and at Bluffton, and when only thirteen years old passed the necessary examination and received a certificate. Mr. Huffman lived with his mother in Salamonie Township, Huntington County, until one year after his marriage, when he moved to Jackson Township, Wells County, settling there in January, 1869, on a tract of eighty acres which he had bought. His land when he settled on it was covered with a heavy growth of timber except the small space he had cleared on which he erected the hewed-log cabin, which is still standing. He resided in this cabin until 1881, when he erected his present residence, which as built with a view to comfort and convenience. He has added to his original purchase until his home farm now consists of 117 acres, all with the exception of about eighteen acres being cleared and improved, the result of years of toil and persevering energy. In politics Mr. Huffman is identified with the Democratic party. He and his wife are members of the German Baptist church, and he is a deacon in the church of that denomination at Sugar Grove.
