John Huffman, second son and third child of Jacob and Catherine, was born in the large two-story log home in Bethel Twp. on 12 Dec 1812. John married Susannah Myers in Clark Co.,Ohio on 16 Feb 1837 and this couple continued to live in Ohio until 1846. John and Susannah' s two oldest children, Mary Magdaline and Lewis N. were born in Clark Co. in 1838 and 1844. About 1844, John purchased 80 acres of land in Sec . 27, Salamonie Twp., Huntington Co., IN. Maro (Morris) Day states that this was "homestead land". By 1870, this farm contained the entire 160 acre SE 1/4 of Sec. 27. John Huffman and family moved to Indiana in 1846 and again per Mrs. Day, "John Huffman drove a wagon from Ohio. Susannah Myers Huffman rode behind on horseback with Uncle Lewis in front and Aunt Mary behind her". While John was clearing land and erecting a small pole cabin with a weight pole roof and four foot clapboards, he and his f amily lived with his bro ther Henry Huffman (see biography of George W. Huffman in Wells Count y History). Henry's home in Jackson Twp., Wells Co . was one mile due south of John's land in Huntington Co.. John next erected a hewed log house for his family and in 1859, he erected the substantial frame house that stood on the property until 1977. John died in this house "in September 1861, aged fifty years" per George W. Huffman biography. According to Mrs. Day, "John Huffman died around 50 years of age. He cut his leg with a sythe and died of gangrene". The family bible of daughter Mary M. RUBSAM'S MILL , This mill is situated on the right bank of Mad River, and below the mouth of Buck Creek. It is on Section 10, two miles west of Springf ield, and one-fourth of a mile south of the National Road. This mill was originally built by Daniel Hertzler in the year 1865; it was completed and ready to run at the time of the murder of Hertzler. Samuel Huffman, Hert zler's son-in-law, became the owner following Hertzler's death, and operated the mill till 1869, when he traded it to John W. Rubsam, the present owner. Rubsam leased it to Crain, Hotsenpiller & Wilson , who operated it for three and a half years. Following the expiration of this time , Mr. Rubsam ran the mill himself till early in 1880. It has been standing idle since then. The mill is a four-story frame, forty by sixty-feet in size, uses two Leffel Wheels and one Brun's Wheel; it has a good water power and does a general milling business.

---------------- PORTRAIT A ND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM Pg 806 , 807 SAMUELHUFFMAN. That well-known establishment, the Palace Livery Stable , located at No. 173 West Main Street, Springfield, is an institution largely patronized by the leading residents of the city and is acknowledged to be first class in every respect. The proprietor with whose name we introduce this sketch, is a wide-a wake business man with a thorough understanding of his calling, and whose promptness in meeting his obligations and courteous treatment of his customers , has built up for him a large patronage which is steadily increasing . Mr.HUFFMAN was born July 26, 1832, at the country home of his parents in Bethel Township, five miles west of Springfield, and is the tenth child of Jacob and Catherine (FARMWOOD) HUFFMAN, natives of Virginia. Jacob HUFFMAN came with his parents to Clack County, this State , in 1802, the same year that Ohio was admitted into the Union as a State. He entered a tract of Government land, the patent of which is still care fully preserved in the HUFFMAN family. The paternal grandfather of our subject was Henry HUFFMAN, a native of Germany, who upon coming to America, engaged in farming and spent his last years in Bethel Township, Clark County, this State. The maternal ancestry of Mr. H UFFMAN was also of German origin. Jacob HUFFMAN, his father, was reared to farm pursuits and learned the trade of a stone mason, becoming skilled in his calling and laid the foundation of many of the houses and barns in Clark County. He built for himself a substantial stone residence, the stone being dressed for the interior and requiring nop lastering. The partitions were also of stone and the whole formed a very solid structure, capable of withstanding the storms of a century. The first dwelling of the parents of our subject was a hewed log house, one of the best in the county, and within which the greater part of their large family of ten children were born. These comprise six sons and four daughters, all of whom lived to mature years but of whom there are now only four living, two sons and two daughters. The eldest son, Henry, died at the advanced age of eighty-five years; Samuel, our subject, was the youngest born. Mr.HUFFMAN pursued his early studies in a log school house in what was familiarly known at the Keifer district and at an early age was taught to make himself useful around the farm. He was but thirteen years old at the time of his f ather's death, and he remained with his mother until his marriage . This interesting and important event occurred March 17, 1854, the bride being Miss Margaret HELFRICK. Mrs. HUFFMAN was born in 1835, in this county, and is a daughter of Michael and Barbary HELFRICK, who were of German birth and parentage and emigrated from the Fatherland at an early day. They settled in this county and spent their last days here. Mr. and Mrs. H UFFMAN after their marriage located in Springfield Township where Mr. H UFFMAN occupied himself at milling, operating the Rock Point Mills on Mad River, about six years. Later he assumed charge of the Tecumseh Mills in Mad River Township with which he was connected seven years. He next returned to Rock Point Mills, which he operated two years more and upon leaving these he removed to the site of the Perue Mills. Later he built and operated the same mill and finally assumed the sole proprietorship, continuing to operate this mill for about seven years. Then selling out, he removed to Springfield and invested a portion of his capital in a stock of hardware. He was in trade two years and then established himself in the grocery business at Springfield. We next find him dealing in coal and lumber and from this he drifted into the livery business, becoming owner of a lot of fine stock and equipages. Mrs Margaret HUFFMAN departed this life ather home in Rock Point Mills in 1863, leaving three children, two daughters and a son. Catherine is the wife of William STICKNE Y, of Springfield Township; Effie is the wife of Forrest ZIRCLE , and they reside in Springfield; Stephen J. operates a meat market in Springfield. In 1865, Mr. HUFFMAN contracted a second marriage with Barbara HERTZLER, who was then a resident of Bethel Township , but who was born in Lancaster, Pa., in 1832. Her father, Daniel HERTZLER, was a prominent farmer, miller and distiller of Clark County, this State, and is now dead ( was murdered in 1867). Of this union there have been born three children, the eldest of whom, a daughter, Mattie, is the wife of H. C. STORY, of Springfield; Daniel H. is the chief assistant of his father in the livery business; Harry M. also makes himself useful in a like manner. The f amily residence is a substantial brick structure, pleasantly located on West Main Street. Mrs. HUFFMAN is the owner of a good farm in Springfield Township, one and one-half miles west of the city. Mr. HUFFMAN, politically, supports the Democratic party and socially belongs to Clark Lodge, No. 101, F & A.M.; Springfield Chapter, No. 48, R . A. M. and Lodge N o. 146, I. O. O.F. He has become well-to-do by his own energy and industry, and has been no unimportant factor in advancing the business interests of his adopted city. Source: Find A Grave.com

---- ----------------- REV. LEWIS HUFFMANDIED SUNDAY --------- ---------------------- Rev.Lewis Huffman, son of John and Susan (Myers) Huffman, was born in Clark county, Ohio a few miles west of the city of Springfield on the sixth day of June, 1844, and finished the last lap of life's long weary road at his home in Mt. Zion on S eptember 6, 1925, being 81years and 3 months of age at time of death. When he was about two years of age his parents emigrated to the state of Indiana and settled on a farm in Huntington county where Lewis grew to manhood and obtained a meager education in the schools of that period . His father died when he was about 17 years of age and as he was the oldest son in a family of seven children he learned early in life the meaning of the word responsibility, ad[sic] nobly did he carry the burdens that rested so heavily on his young shoulders , and it is but fair to state here, that in assisting his widowed mother in this trying hour, he was ably assisted by his brother George who was his junior by two years. In the years of 1868 he was united in marriageto Amy Mounsey who had been a teacher in the Wells county schools, and to this union four sons were born, being D. P. and J . S. living in Salamonie township and F. C. living near by Bluffton and one son who died in infancy. After his marriage he lived on his mother's farm for one year, but in January of 1869 he with his young wife and baby removed to a tract of land in Jackson township where he had previously erected a hewed log cabin, and while the log cabin has long since given way to more commodius buildings, yet with but a few intervals, he has lived on this farm for more than a half century. Even a brief biography of Lewis Huffman would be in a measure the history of all the early settlers. In 1869 his farm was virgin forest, but he lived to see the place where towered the giant oaks, elms, and hickories, transformed into fertile fields and meadows. The mud roads that were almost impassable four months in the year give way to good gravel roads, and the automobile supercede the farm wagon as a means of transportation for the family. As he himself said, "It was his privilege to live in the most wonderful age of the world's history." He united with the Church of the Brethren about the year 1870 and from that time until his death he was loyal and true to the pinciples of the church of his choice and was for more than thirty years, an Elder in the church, having charge of the class at the Sugar Grove and for about two years of this time, also having charge of the Brethren church at Markle. Owing to the infirmitites due to advancing age, he had not been able to attend church services regularly, but he made it a point of honor to always attend the annual love feast and communion of his church at Sugar Grove, every autumn, but at the annual love feast this autumn his place will be vacant. While he had been in failing health for a long time, it was only during the past month that his condition became critical and the frail tenement of clay, brok e pretty rapidly and he passed away without pain, on Sunday , Sept. 6th. Besides the widow and the three sons, and one brother, previously referred to, he leaves another brother, Jacob F. Huffman, of Warren and one sister, Mrs. Rachael Campbell, of Liberty Center and one brother, Elijah Huffman, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Minnich and Mrs. Martha Gephart, having preceded him in death. Besides these there are thirteen grandchildren, one great grandchild and a wide circle of more distant relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sugar Grove church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 in charge of Rev. D. B . Garber, of Markle. Burial was in the Jones cemetery.

LEWIS HUFFM AN, one of the prosperous agriculturists of Jackson Township , was born in Clarke County, Ohio, the date of his birth being June 6, 1844. When two years of age he was taken by his parents, John and Susannah ( Myers) Huffman, to Huntington County, Indiana, and there he grew to manhood, being reared to the avocation of a farmer, which he has made his life-work. January 4, 1868, he was married to Miss Miami Monnsey, a native of Wells County, Indiana, born in Liberty Township, a daughter of John and Caroline (Stratton) Monnsey. Her mother died when she wasa child of ten years, and her father died April 30 , 1886. They were among the early settlers of Wells County, and Mr. Monnsey saw the transformation of the county from a wilderness into its present condition. Four children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Huffman - -David P., John Scott, Franklin C. and one who died in infancy. DavidP . , their eldest son, was educated in the schools of his township and at Bluffton, and when only thirteen years old passed the necessary examination and received a certificate. Mr. Huffman lived with his mother in Salamonie Township, Huntington County, until one year after his marriage, when he moved to Jackson Township, Wells County, settling there in January, 1869, on a tract of eighty acres which he had bought. His land when he settled on it was covered with a heavy growth of timber except the small space he had cleared on which he erected the hewed-log cabin, which is still standing. He resided in this cabin until 1881, when he erected his present residence, which as built with a view to comfort and convenience. He has added to his original purchase until his home farm now consists of 117 acres, all with the exception of about eighteen acres being cleared and improved, the result of years of toil and persevering energy. In politics Mr. Huffman is identified with the Democratic party. He and his wife are members of the German Baptist church, and he is a deacon in the church of that denomination at Sugar Grove.

    ------------------------- GEORG E W. HUFFMAN
A biographical compendium of the nature of this work would be incomplete without due reference to the life of George W. Huffman, whose career as a citizen and as a public official have won for him a prominent place in the esteem of the people of Wells county. Mr. Huffman's parents were natives of Clark county, Ohio, but about the year 1846 they came to Indiana, settling in the county of Huntington, where the subject was born on the 27th date of January, 1847. His father, John Huffman, was a farmer and spent the remainder of his life in his adopted state. Like the majority of country lads, the early life of George W. was spent under the parental roof and as soon as old enough to be of practical service he was obliged to contribute his share towards cultivating the farm and providing for the general support of the family. In the common schools he acquired a fair knowledge of the fundamental branches and later , by much reading, close observation and contact with the world in various business and official capacities, became one of the well balanced and thoroughly informed men of the community in which he has so long resided. Actuated by motives of filial duty he remained at home until his twenty-second year, meantime assuming much of the responsibility of managing the farm and sparing no pains in looking after his parents' interests and ministering to their comfort and welfare. At the age of twenty- two he took a life companion in the person of Miss Sarah C. NEFF, of Wayne county, this state, and shortly after his marriage moved to the county of Wells where he engaged in farming on land leased for the purpose. Mr. Huffman began life as an independent factor with a limited capital, but in the course of two years w as enabled to purchase a home of his own , investing his means in an eighty-acre tract of wood land in section 1, Jackson township. To clear and reduce this place to cultivation required long and unremitting toil, but with a spirit born of a determination to succeed, he pursued in the undertaking until in due time he not only had a well tilled farm, but had increased his real estate to one hundred and ninety-eight acres of as fine soil as the county can boast. Mr. Huffman was extremely fortunate in his selection, although unconsciously so, as future developments attested. When oil was discovered in the Indiana field, it was found that his farm lay in the heart of the finest producing district of the state, the result of the discovery raising the value of his land many fold, its present worth being conservatively estimated at over thirty thousand dollars. As a farmer Mr. Huffman has long enjoyed the reputation of being one of the most enterprising and thorough of the county, as the splendid condition of his fields and the general appearance of his place abundantly prove. Admirably situated for agricultural and live stock purposes, he has spared no pains in its development and, barring the boundless wealth which lies beneath the soil, it is today one of the finest farms as well as one of the most beautiful and attractive homes in the township of Jackson. For many years Mr. Huffman has taken an active interest in public and political affairs and since attaining his majority has been unwavering in his allegiance to the Democratic party. Not only has he been an active worker, but his ability as a natural leader of men long since caused his services to be sought by the councils of his party both in local and general campaigns. In the year 1893 he was elected sheriff of Wells county, which responsible office he filled four years, proving a most capable and obliging public servant, his administration being eminently satisfactory to the people regardless of party ties. At the expiration of his term he retired with the best wishes of all and since that time has not been actively engaged in any vocation further than to look after his large and constantly increasing oil interests, which yield him a handsome income. At the present time there are twelve producing wells on his place which, with others to be drilled at intervals, assure him a fortune of still larger magnitude in years to come. To Mr. and Mrs. Huffman have been born three children, the oldest of whom, Oscar, died at the age of three and one- half years; Ella, now the wife of Isaac ROUSH, of Mt . Zion, this state, and Charlie WAYNE, the youngest, who served with distinction in the late Spanish-American war and at the present time lives in the city of Bluffton. In his private life Mr. Huffman is sociable, hospitable and generous, ever ready to lend a helping hand to others and to give his influence and material assistance to all enterprises having for their object the general welfare. Few men in the county are as well and favorably known. His integrity has always been above reproach and his name is synonymous for all that is correct in manhood and ennobling in citizenship. Already he has won many victories in life's battle field and it is no extravagant flight of fancy to indulge in the prediction that many more triumphs will yet be his before the days of his usefulness and power shall end. Fraternally Mr. H uffman is a member of Lodge No. 92, Knights of Pythias, and religiously belongs to the Methodist church, as does also his wife. Biographical Memoirs of Wells Co., IN, 1903, B. F. Obituary - Huntington, IN. Herald-Press - Monday, March 2, 1925 Huffman, Elijah R.

Elijah R. Huffman, seventy years old, contractor of Warren, ended his life Monday morning about 6:30 o'clock by hanging himself from a rafter in the barn at his home on Fourth street. The body was found shortly after 7 o'clock by Jacob Huffman, a brother and Isaiah Barnes who had gone to the Huffman home with the intention of accompanying Mr. Huffman to Huntington on legal business. Death had occurred about 6:45 o' clock. Mr. Huffman had been in his usual health but was thought to have been worried about financial affairs. He had become deeply involved in the contracting business and recently a petition has been filed asking for a receiver for the Huffman Construction company which included Mr. Huffman and his son Curtis B. Huffman . That financial troubles caused Mr. Huffman to take his life is the opinion. Coroner Grover M. Nie investigated the affair and returned a verdict of suicide. Mr. Huffman arose Monday morning about 6:25 o 'clock went to the basement to fix the fire and later started the morning meal. He left the house and did not return. Mrs. Huffman arose and was about the house as usual when Mr. Barnes called for her husband . She went to the barn to search for him and not finding him returned to the house. She made three other attempts to locate her husband at one time going into the barn and climbing a ladder to see if he was in the hay mow. When Mr. Huffman, the brother, arrived at the house he and Mr. Barnes went in search of Mr. Huffman and found him dead . Mr. Huffman had stood on a lard can, fastened a noose about his neck, and stepped off the can. His body was taken down and a doctor summoned in the hopes that life still remained in his body. The man was pronounced dead and the coroner was summoned. Mrs. Huffman stated Monday that her husband had not talked Monday morning which was unusual . The Huffman family came to Warren twenty years ago. Mr.Huffman was contractor for Jackson township roads and was engaged in the Warren creamery. He later organized the construction company.Surviving are the widow and two children, the son, C. B. Huffman and a daughter, Mrs. Oscar Morris of Mt. Zion. Brothers are Jacob of Warren, Lewis of Mt. Zion, and George of Fort Wayne. Mrs. Robert Campbell of Bluffton is a sister. The son is at present at Bremen,Ind. where a sewer is under construction.
