James Crawford and Sarah Van Zandt (Vansant) were married in Botetour t County, Virginia. Records at Fincastle, Virginia state her father, I saiah Vansant gave written permission for his daughter Sarah to marr y James Crawford. Marriage bond mentioning Samuel Roberts dated 21 Oct ober 1786. James Crawford moved from Virginia to Kentuckyy in1795 an d later settled on a farm near Hillsboro, Fleming County about1800. Ja mes Crawford and Sarah VanZandt Crawford are buried on this farm. Thei r tombstones show James Crawford died May 16, 1836 and Sarah VanZand t Crawford died Nov 25 , 1827. Crawford, from actual knowledge, family tradition, and infor mation received through authoritative sources, do hereby make the foll owing declaration: That I am sixty-nine years of age; that I reside o n a farm near Hillsboro,in the county of Fleming and State of Kentucky ; that I am the son of John Simpson Crawford, who died in the year 187 0, and the only one of his children now living; and that the said Joh n Simpson Crawford, my father, was the son of James Crawford, who wa s born in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, and his legal a nd lawful wife Sarah Vansandt, who was also a native of the State of V irginia. That the said James Crawford, my grandfather, and the said Sa rah (Vansandt)Crawford, my grandmother, were united in marriage in th e county of Botetourt and State of Virginia, in the year 1786; and tha t Crawford and his wife the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, about th e year 1795, moved from the State of Virginia to the State of Kentucky , and, about year 1800, the former squatted on a tract of land situate d in the county of Fleming, in the State last aforesaid, where he an d his said wife continued to reside until the dates of their deaths. T hat the same James Crawford and his wife, the said Sarah (Vansandt) Cr awford, were both buried on the farm acquired, as aforesaid, and on wh ich I now reside; that I have taken the dates of their deaths from th e inscriptions on the tombstones which mark their respective graves; a nd that from the said inscriptions, I know that the said Sarah(Vansand t) Crawford died on November 25, 1827, and that the said James Crawfor d died on May 16, 1836. I further state that the said James Crawford a nd his wife, the said Sarah (Vansandt) Crawford, had fourteen children , whose names were as follows: 1- .- Mary Crawford 2.-Alexander Crawfo rd 3.-- Henry Hogburn Crawford 4.-- Isaiah Crawford 5.-- Margery Crawf ord 6.-- Sarah Crawford 7.-- James Crawford 8.--Samuel Crawford 9.-- J ane Crawford 10.- John Simpson Crawford 11.-Joshua Crawford 12.- Willi am Crawford 13.- Elizabeth Crawford 14.-Anna Crawford That the said Al exander Crawford, my uncle, designated as number two in the above lis t of children of the said James Crawford and his wife, the said Sara h (Vansandt) Crawford, was born in the State of V irginia, moved to th e State of Kentucky with his said father and mother , and at a later d ate removed to the State of Illinois. I further state that the said Ja mes Crawford was a soldier in the Revolutionary War; that he enliste d in said war from the County of Botetourt and State of Virginia; an d that he received a pension for his service therein.
