    Notes:

    Elizabeth Laird was born to Joseph C. and Eleanor "Ellen" (Morison) Laird in Aberdenshire, Scotland, the second of their eight children. Elizabeth's parents were born on the west side of Scotland, and itis unknown why they travelled northeast to Aberdeenshire, but likely it had something to do with work. Elizabeth's father was born in a very small town by the name of Kilmacolm in Renfrewshire, Scotland, near Glasgow. There may not have been any opportunities there, aside from farming. Elizabeth's mother was born in either Glasgow or Lanark,Scotland, towns that are adjacent to Kilmacolm or thereabouts. Four more siblings joined Elizabeth before the Laird family began to migrate toward the United States. Her brother, John Ernest Laird, was born in 1817 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The final child, Peter Laird (my direct ancestor) was born in 1821 in Clark County, Ohio, probably in Greene Township, where the family is found in the 1830 census.The year before her brother Peter was born, Elizabeth married Thomas Claton, Jr. on October 12, 1820, in Warren County, Ohio. Thomas was the son of Thomas D. Claton and Elizabeth Rosa (Brand) Claton . He was born June 12 , 1798 in New Jersey. Elizabeth and Thomas spent their first seven years of married life in Warren County, Ohio, where their first six children were born. Sometime between April of 1827 and May of 1828, they moved to Flat Rock, Shelby County, Indiana, where Elizabeth gave birth to TEN more children! All in all, the Clatons had sixteen children, some of whom died as infants. Others died while very young. Some barely reached majority. Children that survived to old age were only five: James lived to age 79 ; Sarah Elizabeth (Claton) Van Benthuysen lived to be 84; Joseph Washington lived to be77; Cynthia (Claton ) Cochran lived to her 80th year; and Benjamin Franklin lived to the age of 69. Their children were: Adam,1821-1822 James, 1822-1901 Peter, 1823-1825 Eleanor, 1824-1825 Mary,1825-1853 Sarah Elizabeth, 1827-1911 Joseph Washington, 1828-1905 Cynthia, 1829-1909 Thomas Jefferson, 1833-1883 Elizabeth, 1834-1855 infant, 1836-1836 infant, 1837-1837 Louisa, 1838-1857 William Laird,1840-1879 Benjamin Franklin, 1842- 1911 Sanford Ballingal, 1844-1864 Elizabeth herself was 63 when she died in 1865. Her husband lived another 9 years, dying in October of 1874. Their descendants are numerous and wide spread, many of whom migrated all the way west and can be found in California and other western states .

    CYRUS STEPHEN DIED LAST NIGHT
    Well Known Washington Township Resident Succumbs Ill One Year

    Cyrus Stephen well known man, died at his home in Washington township Thursday night at eight o'clock . He had been in ill health for the past year with a complication of diseases. Mr . Stephen was born in Washington township April 21, 1850, and was the son of Martin and Mary Stephen He was seventy-seven years at the time of his death. In September, 1873, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary E . Miller, and one son and one daughter were born to them. He was a member of the Christian church at Flat Rock and the Odd Fellows lodge at Lewis Creek. The lodge will participate in the funeral services. He had spent his entire life in Washington township with the exception of five years. Surviving are the widow, the daughter, Mrs. Mae Chapman, of Indianapolis; one granddaughter, Mrs . Ruth White, of Indianapolis, and one grandson, Howard White, of Indianapolis. A son , Marcus Stephen, preceded him in death in 1907. Funeral services will be held at the Christian Union church in Flat Rock Saturday morning at ten o'clock following short services at the home at 9:15 o'clock. Interment will be in the Roberts Chapel cemetery in charge of C. F. Fix & Son.

    At this time there is no phone of Sarah's tombstone on find a grave. A request has been submitted for the photo. The dates are most likely wrong due to the fact that her mother died August 12, 1853 but until i get a photo or personally go to Lewis Creek to Patterson Cemetery there isn't anything else i can put. Most likely she was born on August 12th and Mary died during or shortly after her birth. Some say this was her mom's sixth child but i have not found any record of another child so far.

    Services will be Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Sleeth Funeral Home, for Martin D. Kelsay, 93, of 734 Fair Ave., who died Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Major Hospital following several months illness.
    He resided with his daughter, Mrs. Clarence Alexander of the Fair Ave., Address.
    Burial will be in Miller Cemetery, with the Rev. Jack E. Jones officiating.
    Friends may call at the funeral home at any time.
    Mr. Kelsay was a retired painting contractor, having been owner of the Kelsay Painting and Decorating Co., for 20 years.
    A longtime resident of Shelbyville, Mr. Kelsay was a member of the First Baptist Church.
    Born in Howard County Nov. 8, 1873, he was the son of Harvey and Elizabeth Kelsay.
    On Nov. 6, 1895, he married Grace Smith, who died in December, 1960.
    Surviving with the daughter here are five other children, Mrs. Raymond(Pearl)Eck and Russell Kelsay, Shelbyville; Orian Kelsay of Jackson Township, Mrs. Fred(Mary)House, Orlando, Fla.; and Mrs. Fayne(Ruth) McKelleb, Gas City; 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchilden.
